We begin Tetrastatum by being introduced to ‘Psychothotonix,’ a new field made to “maximize the immersive experience of the reader/viewer of a novel or motion picture, providing thought-provoking entertainment to a broad audience.” So from the first, we are in a kind of metafiction where the ‘characters’ are a pair of DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) scientists looking to go back in time and save his family (killed in a car accident). Dr. Richard and Tim Smith are researching time travel. While at first it is simply a conceptual endeavor, it soon becomes quite real.

While committed for a suicide attempt, Smith’s mind is able unlock the concept beginning to journey through time. Although Smith is ultimately able to change the past, he soon experiences ongoing ripple effects a la The Butterfly Effect. This temporal mess and editing makes up the tension of the novel. Smith’s quantum teleportation soon brings him under the thumb of those who would want to control his mental time travel.

There is an element of Douglas Adams and Terry Gilliam’s kind of satirical humor as Dr. Richard (the author) visit the biggest box store in the universe, the Universal Depot, for groceries as well as the panel they characters are brought up against to explain their time-crimes if you will featuring judges like Mr. Fed, Mr. Farma, and Press. Readers will find themselves immersed in a very strange but enticing world.

Even though Tetrastatum is fiction it is loaded with scientific details requiring readers to pay deep attention. If readers are patient, they’ll find themselves immersed like the character Tim Smith in the myriad possibilities modern physics offers. Science fiction thrillers on this scale tend to promise more than they can deliver. However, the authors know their theoretical physics (throughout the novel are illustrations and examples to aid readers) as well as psychology and are able to live up to demands. Is Smith literally lost in thought, that is, insane or genuinely able to mentally move through time?

Overall, sci-fi lovers will find Tetrastatum a satisfying time travel adventure with just enough action, erotic locales, and tongue-in-cheek humor. But on top of all of this, Richards has also crafted a hard sci-fi novel doing what all the best science fiction does–it analyzes and critiques our current cultural sensibilities. This makes Tetrastatum not just a compelling read but an innovative one.

About the Authors

Dr. Richard has been involved in the field of Photonics for over 30 years, including working as a Business Development Director for Amnon Yariv at Orbits Lightwave, the inventor of the slow light laser. His work has resulted in the development of classified military technology, providing innovative technology used by academia to facilitate Nobel Prize winning physics projects, the integration of laser technology to enhance sporting events, the adaptation of advanced Photonic and Psychothotonix℠principles to enhance major motion film, quantum cryptography and most recently Dr. Richard is co-authoring a fictional novel, Tetrastatum.

The novel is based on his extension of Schrödinger’s equations that propose a new revolutionary construct of the existing space-time paradigm and delves into the resulting new exciting field of Psychothotonix℠, the measurement and control of human perceptions and related human behavior patterns based on space-time imaging. Dr. Richard believes that the new proposed space-time paradigm and Psychothotonix℠ have significant philosophical and societal implications that should be available to everyone, not just academia. He is writing the book to explain the theory in an easy understandable format that combines metaphysics and science to present concepts that are accessible to anyone desirous of a better understanding of the universe we live in.

Dr. Richard’s professional career has included working for Boeing, Naval Air ECCM Intelligence Group, Newport Corporation, Orbits Lightwave, Parrot Industries, CASIX, Inc. and Beckman Coulter, Inc. His work has resulted in innovation at some of the leading public and private sector organizations in the United States including, Boeing, NASA, TRW, Northrup Grumman and Ball Aerospace. Dr. Richard’s contribution to the field has been recognized globally as he received international awards for “Best Photonics Product Development”.

Dr. Richard invented the EECM Cognitive Machine Vision system for detection of enemy missile threats as well as the “I* Movie” methodology, integrating Photonic system level special effects in film as well Psychothotonix℠ to develop themes and enhance screenplays. He has presented to Disney, Dream Works, California Institute of Technology as well as other major film and entertainment companies.

Dr. Richard received his BA in physics (honors) from the University of California Fullerton. He was in a full scholarship PhD program in physics at the University of California Irvine and a PhD program in philosophy at Claremont Graduate School. Dr. Richard completed his two dissertations (involving human interpretations of laser and electro-optical images) while under top secret clearance. He also has: an advanced placement teaching credential, an advanced certification (from the University of Wisconsin) in laser and optical design; and other advanced certifications in fiber optics, computer programming, technology business development, financial products, dance, anatomy and physiology.
