Tamara Veitch and Rene DeFazio
Waterside Press, 2018
The Emissary, Tamara Veitch and Rene DeFazio’s first installment of their One Great Year series releasing October 9th, is premised on the notion reincarnation is real but only for a select group of immortal beings sent to Earth to guide humanity to its Great Year, a golden age occurring once every 26,000 years coinciding with the planet’s rotational wobble. The novel zeroes in on three Emissaries, immortals from a lost continent Atitala, Marcus, Theron, and Helghul. Each have been working their influence while searching for each other from lifetime to lifetime, as the Atitalans are reborn time and again in human form until their task is complete. Yet they possess incomplete memories and only recognize their brethren’s auras at close range, leaving them at once lonely and longing driven by an intense desire to connect.
It is an ambitious story, and one that succeeds because Veitch and DeFazio’s prose moves smoothly allowing readers to feel the full force of the story with anxiety or confusion regarding time, character, or events. It may seem a simple trait, but this gives readers a fuller and more pleasurable experience as they let themselves be pulled into the authors’ world. This is a world you will want to be drawn into–at once complicated and straight-forward, pragmatic and fantastic–making The Emissary not just a solid first novel but an excellent beginning for a new fantasy series.
The blend of mythology, spiritualism, and adventure makes this fantasy story engaging. In addition, Veitch and DeFazio have written their primary character as an elegantly torn protagonist. Marcus is driven always to find his true love Theron in whatever form she may inhabit. However, his current body, that of Maxwell Quinn, is an angst-ridden fuck-up the literal embodiment of the exhaustion of Marcus’ reincarnation. Yet, Quinn knows and feels he cannot resist his true nature.
The story moves deftly from the personal drama between the Atitalans to the grand drama of civilization(s). The Emissary presents us with a seemingly never-ending cycle that we know and feel must come to a profound climax in both narratives, but it is unclear which will overcome the odds. Readers who love their fantasy to have a touch of science fiction, feel real, and embrace chaos will find the novel immensely satisfying. As an adventure novel and a literally timeless love story, The Emissary challenges readers to think past assumptions and embrace wonder. The stakes of the novel are ultimate, the very existence of humanity in the battle between Good and Evil giving readers all the drama they could want.
