Over the last few years, I’ve had a very tense relationship to my poetry. Around the time I began Gently Read Literature, I decided that my time writing poetry was done. But then after closing GRL down after six years, I began to write. At first, it was merely lines muttered to myself in the car or phrases typed into my phone, because I thought they sounded interesting. Soon I found myself working the lines over, parsing them out into syllabics, twisting their wording so that I was entertained, and ruminating on how I could create a persona with them. I realized I was writing poetry again.
