This month’s playlist has a tone that I can’t put my figure on but I loved how it came together.
Probably my favorite tracks are the Sarah Jaffe tune from 2014 and Lianne La Havas’s ‘Green & Gold.’ It’s difficult to find good contemporary R&B or new soul, so La Havas was a gem of a find for me.
I’ve also discovered The Pack AD, a duo that blows my mind. It’s Meta Animal EP is getting under my skin. Minneapolis’s own Polica has a new track that I can get behind with ease making me very eager for their next record.
Album-wise there have been more than a couple that have made it into steady rotation. The El Vy side project by the lead singer of The National turned out to be pretty solid. It was just enough not The National but just enough like it to really satisfy.
Shana Falana’s album Set Your Lightning Fire Free continues to impress.
I’ve been getting back into instrumental bands. This month I found the band Baulta and its 2014 album Any Fool Can Regret Yesterday.
Finally, there is Girls Names whose album Arms Around a Vision is like an edgier The Church. My late-80s/early-90s dark wave urge is sated with this band.
